Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Yeah it was mate, there is a day there this Sunday (17th) if you're free, think there's a couple of Golfs going too. Being organised by Mike at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I quite fancy it actually so might see if I can blag an afternoon session a bit cheaper.

Not got many pics at the moment, but collecting powdercoated parts tomorrow and have been cleaning and painting bolts today. Got the tensioner painted too and fitted the new bushes;

Picked up the powder coated bits today, very happy with them. Quick mock up just to see how the colour scheme looks;

Yep I have been pressing on with this, but it's so slow when everything you pick up to fit has to be cleaned and painted So, have gasket matched the inlet and exhaust manifolds and been cleaning and painting .. nearly ready to put it all together
You can see how small the ports are;

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Engine as it's looking at the moment
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Unfortunately a couple of days ago someone caught the corner of my bumper in a car park and ripped skin off the iron Fortunately she stopped and owned up and we have agreed repairs outside of insurance so soon to be properly sorted. Put the bumper off my other Jetta on for the time being as it's Mot day today ... picking it up at 2.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I also took the clocks out to replace the highbeam light that had stopped working, so thought I'd have a play with the colour filters and also flipped the filter on the lcd screen so the numbers light up in the colour whilst the background is black. Looks pretty good though the red plastic I used is actually a little pink so might redo it later.

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
That engine looks awesome, mate. Sorry to here about the damage, though.
Is it hard to take the bumpers off the Mk2 Jettas? My mate's are in a right state (and need a refurb, badly) And is there a way of repairing scuffs and creases in them easily? I'll have to repaint the bottom of them as well, as they have more stone cips and nicks on them than paint ATM!

Bumpers are easy to get off, four bolts underneath. Repairing damage to the textured part is difficult, although there are some pretty good texture paints around now I believe. Might be worth dropping in on your local bodyshop to ask, or if the bumpers aren't genuine you can get a front one from euro car parts for about 50quid and you can get rear skins too.

Thanks. I heard that you have to jack the engine up to get the front bumper off, is this correct? Are the bumpers from ECP just straight black? Can you paint them? Cheers : )
EDIT: What would be the best way to try and flatten and paint the black section of the bumpers?

Yeah bumpers from ecp are black I believe and yeah you just paint them to match. You don't have to jack the engine to get the bumper off, it's just advised to have a jack underneath putting on just a little pressure as the four bumper bolts are basically what holds the front crossmember in place. There are two other small bolts that hold it in too and I actually often just leave the engine supported on those, so long as you don't start it or anything it should be fine.
Dunno about flatting back the textured parts I'm afraid, never done it, have a search on some other forums.
Cheers Jettameister, made a start on the engine swap today;

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Good work with the bodywork, Simeon. What the best plan of attack on small dings on bodywork? (Such as deep scratches etc?)
Do you add a bit of filler after rubbing it down, just to flatten it off? (My mate's Jetta is full of them, you see.......)
EDIT: It looks like the inner wings on my mate's Jetta have turned a nice "rusty brown" (Such as the battery tray etc) What's the best way of getting into these areas so they can be cleaned up. What needs to be removed etc? Cheers : )

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Been making a little progress, paint looks a bit orange in the pics, but it dried more red (still not a perfect match of course, but better than rust);

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Cheers, cleaned and primed the gearbox this evening, just got to decide on colour now. Was thinking silver (already bought the paint too) but having second thoughts and thinking of going with black instead, hmmmm

Re: Jetta Gti .. new daily
Cheers guys, I'm using an ATH code 'box, same ratios as the 4+e 'boxes which will improve the fuel economy slightly.
Not much progress unfortunately, but subframe is back together now and have done a few other bits and bobs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I seam welded the wishbones before powder coating too;
