Todays update, had another box of bits turn up today. Air filters and brake cooling duct, and this little baby...

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Tonight i've plumbed in the bias valve at last, had to re-cut the threads on the two pipe fittings as I could not get 1/8 NPT fittings any where!! Done now though, all cliped up and ready for fluid.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Also fitted these brake duct mounts, got the from a Club GTI group buy.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Tomorrow evening should see the cylinder head fitted and timed, should also get the brakes bled up... see ya soon.

Evening all.... well, guess what...yip done a little bit more tonight.

Removed the engine and box to allow me to clearance the bulkhead for the exhaust then pump bled the brakes, i'll pressure bleed them on Sunday when i've checked the lines for fluid leaks. the pedal feels loads better with the genuine master cylinder, think its gonna be worth it. Ordered up new jets and chokes for the carbs, big thanks to Terry at Glenco for that, he's a star PM me if you need his number..... Carb god!!!!

The engine is now finish mounted and torqed down, big assembly weekend ahead of me... wish me luck.

Well I suppose the S*** had to hit the fan at sometime.... everything was going too well evedently Rolling Eyes

Monday evening all was set, primed the oil system, primed the fuel system, turned the engine on the starter for the first time, good oil pressure, re fitted the coil king lead and she fired first time of asking.... ran for exactly 6 seconds....... Bas***d thing was Dieseling.... ticking on every stroke from every piston..... Crying or Very sad

Check these out, just in from stripping it down...

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Its not very clear but you can see in the next photos where the pistons have been hitting the head between the cylinders where the chamber edge squares off, its the tinyest of marks (Shiney line).....

GUTTED Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
Its a good job i'm off for the rest of the week, gonna make an early start, machine the head and see if I can't have a proper tune out of her by tomorrow night....

Just speachless.

The pistons are high compression so the piston crowns stick up above the head gasket.... didn't check the clearences properly with the head design, it turns over by hand really well without the plugs in so didn't think there was a problem.... not shown it but i've got the sump off too, had to find the noise and started by checking the bottom end. If I can get a head gasket tomo i'll get her running.

Hope your better soon Steve, see you at the weekend.

I destroyed my 16v engine because I had high lift cams and used an MLS head gasket which is a little bit thinner than the fibre one. It turned over fine, but as soon as I hit the limiter it all went wrong.

Lucky enough I'm using the thicker (1.5mm compressed) metal HG so should be ok......

Well amother 13 hours invested today and guess what Very Happy bounce Laughing cheers .......

Shes alive!!! LOL

Got the head machined first thing, then of to GSF Nottm for another HG whilst that was being done. Put the bottom end (windage tray & sump) back together, then cleaned and re fitted the head along with all of the other bits, Header, Carbs, Cam belt etc etc etc...... Sure this engine could build itself now.... re-primed everything and away she went, just making the noises she should be making....

HAPPY again yeay

Lost a day, not bad considering, might not go on the dyno before the weekend now.

Got the seats and belts to refit, the rest of the front end & brake ducts then the mega valet.

Thanks for all your kind words, kept my chin up.. fortune favours the brave Cool

GOD I need a rest!!!! Its starting to take its toll on me now LOL!

Finished off the nasty jobs i'd been putting off, not that having to rebuild the engine you've just built isn't nasty!!!!

Ran it up to operating temps today, safe to say no leaks, squeeks or rattles Smile Its a bonus that it drives in all five gears AND reverse too!!! Rebuilt and set up the throttle linkage, fuel supply to the carbs, Brake cooling ducts, front bumper, exhaust, drivers seat, steering wheel boss & quick release, and bonnet.

Easy day tomorrow, just got to refit the passengers seat, belts, grill and head lights. Shes booked on the the dyno for Monday, pity I couldn't get it on tomorrow.

More pics for you.
