Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Cheers bud, the pepper pots should look good with 175/50/15 on and should give you arch space with the adaptors fitted unless you do a five stud conversion then you can go for a wider tyre.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
I dont realy want to use a small tyre as it messes up gear Fatima and speedo readings so I will be using a 185/55/15 tyre and arch work to keep it low

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ok sounds good. Imo i would look into a five stud conversion from a mk3 gti matched with g60 22mm master cylinder this is just a simple bolt on mod but would give you much much better brakes. You should be able to pick up all you need from the breakers for under 70 nugget and this will mean you dont need to modify the arches so turning it back later on is still just as easy. Better brakes and a easier life FTW! lol.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Sounds good to me. I have been told that that swap will give a slightly wider track to.

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
It might give you a couple of mill but ive never noticed any, If you use the rear beam and front lower suspention arms/track control arms then it will give a wider track but i would just swap the front hubs and brakes and rear stub axels and brakes. This should keep arch issues nice and simple.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ok mate cheers for the advice. Off to search for VR hubs and calipars

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
If you use the vr set up this will limit you to using 15" wheels or bigger and you will need to upgrade the master cylinder aswell to at least a g6o item this will give you a much better pedal feel and make sure you make the most of those huge stoppers.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ok so i have had the dash out and its back in again with some new soundproofing aswel, engine now wont start and the heater controls dont control what they should so need to swap some cables round i think lol but its coming together now.
will get pics up asap,
im going to pot some seat toledo ( i think, could be cordoba) indicator stalks on and my polo gt steering wheel also, i then need to get the engine running and se if we can solve the overheating problem, if not its going to be save up for engine rebuild,
This really is a no budget build with only about £150 a month spare if i done eat to spend on the car lol so it may take some time but im sure it will be worth it in the end

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Keep on ploding mate it will be worth it in the end . The best builds always take time so dont rush and spend wisely, Just a note on the overheat have you replaced the heater matrix and replaced the input and output hoses for new ones (thats if they were cut to have the modified vavles fitted?)? Also the stat and returned flow to the header bottle my be worth checking?. Good luck bud keep the pics coming.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Listen to dubber there is man there who knows his mk2's and trust me all the best vws take time youll get there and itll all be worth it
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Whats the returned flow and the modified valves, its a 1.9aaz if that makes the slightest bit of differance. I have put in a new matrix and have tried 2 thermostats to

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ah ok then....The modified valves were fitted on a recall by VW in june 95 (i think?) if you have them then you will have one plastic and one alley valve fitted to the input and output water pipes to the heater matrix, These are refered to by many people as the heater bypass valves. Although if these are faulty they usually dont case a over heat. If you take of the cap to the header bottle and run it upto full running temp do you get a steady return flow from the small water pipe that is fitted to the top, front of the header bottle? you should get a return flow all the time even from cold as it is not controled by the stat. Also what colour is your rad/Header bottle cap black or blue?
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
I have just looked through the pics from when you took the 1.6 out you and have the valves fitted at this point. If i was you i would remove these valves if you havent already? As you have changed the heater matrix now and will not need them. They were only needed if you hadnt replaced the old matrix. Sorry dont mean to sound like a bossy know it all.
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Not bossy at all I appreciate all the advice as I'm learning everything as I'm going. As for the header tank cap mine is black.

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ok it would be a good start to get rid of the black cap and get the newer modified blue type but only buy one from VW as the after market ones do fail straight out of the box!

Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Ok then, its been a while but i have been busy after loosing my job and all,
Any how, the Jetta is back on the road, I managed to put everything back together sucessfuly, with no major issues,
I removed the heat exchange valve thingy as dirty dubber said but i am still having overheating issues where the top hose is hot and the bottom one is cold, the water system has been flushed through once or twice now and im qie sure there are no air locks, This leads me to believe the new whater pump we puton is up the swanny, so will most likly try another one of those.
I also need to get the front wheel bearings done and the tracking sorted, New set of glow plugs and that about it really,
Thanks for ll the encouragement and im sure it will be in good working order soon enough,

change the thermostat, start car with expansion cap OFF, run engine till the fan cuts in then check hoses and top up coolant. did mine last weekend. hope it helps,
Re: Project Poverty!!!!
Yep i would second that if your getting hot and cold pipes then it has to be state or water pump. Good luck bud. .
