right no updates for quite a while as it was uncertain if i was selling up - i've decided to keep it now though.

mini update - not really progress but i've binned the camo and gone for some faux leather.

first thing i had to do was make the boost guage pod not look stuck on and test how the leatherette bonded with the pillars and stretched around the curves. i stripped the original material as an earlier test run showed the alfabond adhesive lifted the original fabric and i came away with the new stuff.

just to refresh this is the urban camo i had

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i didn't plan on updating it as progress so didn't do any step by step pics, i extended the boost pod 'slope' with a section of mk2 golf heater vent plastic ducting and pop riveted it along with the pod to the original pillar then fillered it in so it looked smooth. when this was done i trimmed it in the grey faux leather.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i thought it turned out ok, i trial fitted it and it fitted snugly

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

so i did the passenger one too

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then i had to trim the boost gauge face to match

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i was quite happy with them so moved on to unchartered territory - the middle pillars - same method of stripping the original material off and glueing both pillar trim and faux leather then sticking them together

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

they went ok so i fitted them up too

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

luckily i had just enough faux leather to do the rear pillars too, here's what it looked like when removed

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then trimmed

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and fitted

i'm saving for new wheels and for the past two weeks i've been waiting for the 'buyer' to collect my merc rims - assured me it was today and now having sold the adaptors it's fallen through!

so for the past couple of weeks it's been sat looking like this

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

well wednesday i was off work sick and got bored sleeping and trying to be entertained without loud noises so pulled the bora on the drive and began to pull the front end off - last pics of it complete for a while

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

pulled off the grills

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

pics of the cut outs for the fmic pipe work

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then popped the bumper off

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then the front end was removed

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

next i started to remove the bits that are going - firstly the oil catch can, was never permanent and had been leaking (worse than i thought)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

on top of the box

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and under the battery tray

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i removed a few other bits too as i'll be pulling the engine out sooner or later

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and started to attend to the loom, i've always been unhappy with the mess that is the stock loom - it just seems to be everywhere, i'm not going to hide it or anything just reroute it to a more logical set up.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

because some / alot of it will need to be either lengthened or shortened, i need to leave the engine in until i've got it all set up and soldered to the desired route and length

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i need to buy some shrink wrap before i start soldering it all together so routed it roughly where i want it to go, here's my donor loom i'll be hacking up to use wires from to get the right colours / thickness and lengths.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i also made up a little resistor plate yesterday i'm going to mount in the scuttle for all my sai/ n249 etc etc deletes

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

after a while i was getting cold and feeling sick so i headed back into the warmth.

while i was mooching around i decided now (while it's off the road) would be the ideal time to put some fogs back in my headlights + i could do it indoors in the warm.

after my original headlights with fogs got ruined by a bodyshop i had to fit the non fog items as a quick fix, the old ones have been in the shed for about a year so i dug them out and set about fitting them in.

current light without fog

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

removed from casing

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

with a hole saw i carefully cut out the blank in the light

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i salvaged all the bits from the old unit

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and fitted it in

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

comparison

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then repeated it with the other side

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and reffited them all back together

i have spent a long time doing this loom for not much reward [Sad]

as i said earlier in the thread the aim was to re-route the loom in a more logical and neater fasion, not to hide it - just tidy it.

following the other pics i routed the majority of it where i wanted it to go, the majority of the rest of the time was spent either lengthening or shortening loom.

i cut the injector plugs off the donor loom as they were better condition (2007 loom)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and then paired up the wires with shrink wrap

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then heated it and shaped the wires to go where i needed

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

once they were all done i extended the looms and joined it to the original loom

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

next i decided to route the temp sensor wires and vvt wires with the loom for the coilpacks so again extended the wires and wrapped in heat shrink

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

now i'd done that the n75 wires seemed to have to go over the top of everything, so i decided i'd trace the wires back and route them out of the port for the MAF loom.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

so again i shortened the wires and covered them with shrink wrap

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

while i had the loom apart i ran the p/s pressure sensor wires in the injector loom and put shrink wrap over the wires

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i also extended the throttle body loom and IAT wires so i could run it under the inlet.

re routed and shortened Map sensor wires

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i also wanted to remove the loom for the CC, N112, N249 and SAI and put all the resistors on a plate and mount it in the scuttle, so traced all the wires back and mounted the plate (with rubber foot) in the scuttle.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i wanted to keep the loom off the bottom of the scuttle to prevent it picking up moisture and transferring it so i ran it over the top.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

with the reduction of loom i managed to relocate the relays in the box that clips to the bulkhead and binned the box

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i fitted the majority of the loom with the corrugated plastic trunking and took a few 'finished' pics - nothing's clipped in place but the engine's coming out so i'll do it when it goes back in.

yesterday i cleaned up my calipers and carriers, here's the first one cleaned up

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

comparison

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then i took them down the shed, gave them a lick of paint and left them to dry overnight

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

now i'd got the loom where i wanted i started pulling bits off the engine, i got the crank case breather / oil plate off as i want to adapt the outlet breather pipe.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

took most of the bits off the front of the engine

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

and took a pic of the cambelt thats done about 6k, it was replaced along with the tensioner and water pump just before i got the engine but unfortunately they fitted a plastic water pump so i'll chuck a new kit on with metal pump.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

stripped off the p/s tank, header tank and washer bottle while i was there too.

Post by olethalb Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:50 pm

today i was supposed to be doing some work on a mates ibiza but someone crashed into him last night so that was off. instead i thought i'd enjoy the weather and plod away doing some bits to mine instead.

first job of the day was to fit the rear brakes up but while i was cracking on with that this arrived

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i though it rude not to fit it up

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

once i'd done that i trimmed the lips off the dirt shields and fininshed fitting the brakes.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

then i was bored so i started pulling more bits off the lump, while i was doing that a mate arrived in his 1.6 mk4 golf and told me he'd been in humphries for and hour and a half while they tried to get his locking wheel nuts off because he'd lost the key and they couldn't do it so i wacked them off for him, then he asked me to fit some wishbone bushes. i agreed but sent him to audi to get the s3 items.

before i could crack on with mine much more another mate popped round with a saxo strut and hub - he wanted me to fit a wheel bearing to it, so i did that just in time for my mate with the mk4 to come back with the new wishbone bushes, so set about fitting them up too.

now i could continue what i was doing, it seemed most of the bay had been stripped iut so i popped off the shafts, gear linkage and DP and dropped the engine out.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

once it was out i just kept stripping bits off; gearbox

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

clutch and flywheel

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

engine mount

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

turbo

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

next i want to clean the bay then i'll drop the subframe out too.
