MK1 Jetta 2.1 8v - ongoing project Empty MK1 Jetta 2.1 8v - ongoing project

Post by jettadan Tue Jun 19, 2007 10:30 pm

Few pics of my current projects as they stand at the mo. Most recent purchase, 2.1 8v crossflow in need of a little TLC:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Got a few plans for it, including some maintenance issues, sorting some rust and a partial respray - its on hold at the mo while i sell my 1978 LT motorhome scratch

Long-term project, 1.9 crossflow turbo track car:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Long way to go, but having a bit of a clearout at the mo - the plan is to get the fleet down to just these two so i can concentrate on just maintaining and enjoying the blue one, and building the silver one.

Shall be getting shut (possible breaking) my slightly battered Vento 2.0GL:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And getting rid of my other MK1 - should make someone a good project:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

One day i'll post pics of some of my past cars including several MK1 Jettas, a MK2 Jetta GTi 8v, another Vento 2.0GL and a late Highline-spec VR6 Cool

Hope you like Wink

I've only had the metallic blue one since just before Woerthersee, beggining of May I think. I've known the car for a long time, and its had thousands spent on it (got all the receipts). Needs the rear wheel arches sorting and the ends of the sills. The NSF door is holed at the bottom, the NSF wing is bubbling where the ariel hole has been filled and theres a little rust on the scuttle under the winscreen rubber, so going to replace the door and wing with NOS replacements, have the scuttle sorted and replace the inner and outer arches on the rear. Should be good for a few more years after that.

Got some parts at Inters at the weekend, including a new fuel pump, rear wheel bearings, plug leads (which don't fit coz they are for a normal 8v not a crossflow Evil or Very Mad ) and some other odds and sodds.

It could do with coming down a little at the front (i like a little bit of rake Smile ); will be fitting some black BBS wheels and a black Kamei front spoiler i got from Germany. Also will be replacing the dash with one thats not all wonky and sticking an original interior back in.

Oh, and the exhaust will eventually be replaced with a decent 4-2-1 and full system.

I've had the other blue one for a few years, but its not been on the road for a while - thats a 1.3 and needs some parts re-fitting and a new exhaust system. Its had a lot of money spent on new parts by me and the previous owner and i was gonna keep it for a future project, but i think i'll get shut otherwise it'll be sat round forever!

Yeah, apparently it was for sale for months on end - bloke wanted about £3k for it, so i made an offer Wink

I've got receipts from the previous-but-one owners totalling over £7k which doesn't include the engine or box - last owner didn't spend much on it though Evil or Very Mad but didn't use it much either.

Some of the work probably doesn't need doing, but i wanna get it mint and then just use and look after it.....and do the odd track day. Its currently putting out around 165bhp at the flywheel with just over 150lb/ft torque so goes quite well - with a few tweeks and a new exhaust and a re-map it should go a little better.

Erm, apologies for the late update.......this was the car yesterday at Donnington Park:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It kept up with the red MK5 parked in front of it on the grid - that had 270bhp. Also stuck quite nicely to a couple of Ford Focus RS's, although i didn't have enough straight line speed to pass the Porsche Carrera 4 or the M3 Shocked Very Happy

Needs better suspension and track tyres and some strut braces, then i'll be leaving it alone. Brief rundown of what i've done over the past few months. Few rust issues:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Exhaust:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And its replacement:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It needed tyres but I already had the wheels:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Which i refurbed myself:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Knackerd linkage bushes:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Needed an inner CV boot as it had melted:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Glad I looked at that as the CV bolts were all hand tight. Then i stuck a new wing on to replace the original which was bubbling where the ariel hole had been plated and dropped it off at the bodyshop:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Also put a fuel pump on it as it was a bit noisy:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Replaced a few more bits such as knackered ball joints, battery and sensors:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Together with the worn out discs and pads on the front and the grumbling bearings on the rear:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Hope you like.

Blue one is to tide me over till the silver one is finished - will be using it for track days and to go to shows in. It went like the preverbial off a shovel at Donny so can't wait till the silver one is done as that'll be even better.

Looking for some Konis at the mo as one is leaking, then need to get the tracking and camber done as its a bit all over the place at the mo when you put your foot down - stuck some lowering spring caps on it when i removed the struts so its worse than it was before!!!

Gonna get a set of OMP front and rear strut braces for it too, which should help.

Waiting for some custom leads to turn up, then gonna give it a full service and general tweak, and wanna get hold of one of those BMC carbon intakes, before it goes for a remap and rolling road setup.

It seems to go a little better then it did at first, so will be interesting to see what its putting out.

Surprised a few on track too Cool

OMP front upper and lower and rear upper strut braces ordered from Rally Design this morning, together with a clutch foot rest, helmet and gloves (last two are Christmas presents!).

Aaaaand, a set of Gaz Gold coilovers ordered too - to be fitted to the silver one eventually, but i think i'll stick them on the blue one for next years track days to see how they cope. Probably arriving after Christmas though.

Also gotta pick up a couple of new Koni inserts for the front of the blue one - £160 trade for just two top adjustable inserts!!!!!

Will give me something to do this weekend.

Fitted the rear brace:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Front upper won't fit as it fouls on the throttle body......it'd fit if i changed the inlet manifold though............

Gonna have to do some messing with the foot rest to get it to fit right:

To be continued when something happens.

Yeah, its going to a good use so pleased with that as it was a solid little car.

Added some more weight:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So removed some to compensate:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Had a play with the rear brakes, but handbrake still keeps sticking on so gonna try changing the cables before i change the calipers. Got some new rear Greenstuff pads on order as the ones currently on are cracked and glazed over for some reason.........! Also got the front bump stops sorted so can now fit the new front shocks. Tweaked the camber while the wheels were off, so it now sits better but the tracking has gone even worse again! Will get done properly once i've finished fitting bits.

Nearly fixed the leak from the front screen too....and i'd rather not discuss the ignition leads.....lol.

More when i get another flush of motivation to spend a day in a damp and cold shelter!!!

Thanks mate - it doesn't happen over night but you just have to keep chipping away! Only taken me 6 months to get the blue one nearly sorted but its been a bit of a hassle at times, worth it though. Few more bits to do then i can get stuck into the silver one again.

Looks a bit meaner like so:

Boring update. New rear handbrake cables fitted:

And poly rear mounts:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I'm hoping the new cables will solve the rear brake problem - if not it'll be new calipers.

I'll be moving back onto the front suspension again next.

More updates as and when!
