Newbie
Hi, I came here following a link from Skattrd who I know from OCV. I've just bought a MK2 8v GTi Jetta, which I'm planning to convert to a 1.8T.
I have been into dubs for some time now and I also have a MK2 Golf GTi 8v and a Polo GT Coupe. I have owned a MK2 Golf Driver and a MK2 Jetta 1.3 (first car).
Rather than me repost everything...

Re: Newbie
I wanted a Vento for a good while, but got sick of looking for a nice one, all I could find was 1.9TD, not even TDi's.

I should hope so. I really want to go with a 6-speed box as well now I know it can be done.

Re: Newbie
You ought to read about this:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A brief history of F117 XEW
The plan was very simple- buy a cheap car, add a cage
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
chuck in some seats
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
a set of 888's
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
and go to the Ring.
What could be simpler?
Well I had no idea how much of my life, money and considerable patience from my wife, friends, kids and mainly UB this would require!
That first Ring trip saw me following Gary on my third lap. Running through AF I suddenly lost drive, thinking the clutch cable had snapped I wedged it into third gear and kept going, only to eventually die at Kesselchen.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The centre had spun out of the clutch as it turned out my £400 ebay bargain had an 8v gearbox.
I left the car with Ollie at the Ringhaus (then) and he put a new clutch in. I collected the car a month later and in the grimey conditions driving home managed to hit the armco on the Belgium/German border avoiding an Audi A4 heading backwards towards me at great pace
Once home I decided to build a proper engine and bin the cheap suspension I had bought the first time around- note the missing wing post armco!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
With help from UB I built a 9A, balanced bottom end, new everything, polished and ported head, lumpy cams, shiny bits, it was very sexy.....
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I went totally mad and fitted a LSD, silicon hoses, an oil cooler, this was to be a fabulous monster!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It made 185 bhp at Stealth and pulled really well. I was looking forward to my next Ring visit and whipping Shergars arse
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
it lasted two laps and then as far as Brunchen......
Spent beyond £11k on a 1.8t

Re: Newbie
Simon was following me in his Scoob, we were pushing on well, traffic was light and we were probably on a sub 9min pace. Going into Brunnchen Simon thought I had locked up a rear, a small puff of smoke was the only evidence of the death of my beautiful engine.....
I sat at Brunnchen 3 and waited for the ADAC again!
We decided to store the car in Adenau, this meant moving iit from the Ringhaus without power- the great 7km roll began!!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I collected it a month later
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
and set too trying to work out what had happened
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
removing the manifold, things didnt look good
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
removing the head things looked very bad!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
removing the piston, highlighted a few problems
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
seems this had decided to leave the rest of its body and destroy my lovely engine
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The guy who built my head had used second hand valves!

Re: Newbie
And so it was that my car that just a month earlier looked like this
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
now again looked like this
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Time to build another engine, another 9A
But I had read an article about fitting a turbo engine in your Golf in a weekend. Seemed a better idea so I sold the 9A for a grand and bought an ebay AGU from a mk4 Golf 1.8T.
Trouble is, then I thought, well whats the point of building a 180 bhp turbo car, lets strap a huge turbo on it!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
And so a miserable winter commenced working in a poorly lit ex chicken shed, that leaked. With no heating, the wrong tools and a very bad smell.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
V8 Muscle soon referred to my project as the "plane crash"
I had to fit a hydraulic clutch which was fun....
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
and work out everything as I went along- which engine mounts, starter motor, pipe work, it was nightmare!
At the same time for some bizarre reason I decided to strip out the interior- so many wires!!

Re: Newbie
Soon the owner of the chicken shed got pissed off with the mess I was making and kicked me out.
Luckily UB took me in.......
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
and soon I was working on a ramp
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
A kindly S3 donated a few parts after its owner blew its engine apart (little did I know of what was to come) and progress gathered speed
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The rad and intercooler were fitted
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
new wheels thanks to Pye21
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
and suddenly it was in and running
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It went like stink!
And lasted 4 miles
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The rest is already here- but once again a big thank you to UB, Shergar, Jimmy for keeping me sane, and my wife for not divorcing me even though she treatened too frequently!
This one will last. It bloody has too!

Re: Newbie
That looks like it's been an awesome project and also a massive amount of work. Did you use a QPENG kit for the ECU on the AGU?
I'm planning on running the standard 180BHP to be honest, even a 150BHP would be ample from my point of view. I just want to source an 02S 6-speed box, and I need to find out how I'm gonna get a speedo to work.

Re: Newbie
That is someone I know, not me
Less is more when it comes to turbo FWD. 180 would be ample although he is going for 250 as he has a new 225 motor.

Re: Newbie
Well if you have the BAM 225, then 250 is a perfectly easy hike that'll still run really smooth and reliable.
