Thanks for the replies folks.
I picked her up on wed and to say i am chuffed to bits is an understatement, i am new to Jetta's but not to VAG having had little else for 20 years. I think that it could be the most "complete" car ive had as an alround package. This is quite something as the last few cars have all been good and include an early A4 TDI, Fabia VRS, current shape A3 2.0TDI ,a lease Leon FR TDI 170bhp and most recently an older Seat Toledo 1.9TDI oh and not forgetting my wifes b5.5 Passat 1.9TDI.
Will try to post some pics at the weekend after ive given a good clean.

A word of warning,
stolen from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

nobananas wrote:Some of you may have heard about problems with the oil pumps on VAG 2.0 TDi PD's.  Had one in this week and stripped it so I thought I'd share what a pants bit of engineering they really are ! (excuse the terrible pics, taken with oily hands on very old phone !)

This is the counter-rotating balancer assembly which is bolted to the bottom of the engine in the sump (the assembly is in two halves and has been split in this pic).  The right hand shaft is driven by a short chain off a sprocket on the crankshaft, this in turn drives a similar shaft (on the left) via a gear set in the opposite direction, the strange square lumps on the shafts are the balance weights that are 'half drum' shaped. To the bottom left is the oil pump that has been removed from it's position just to the right of it.  The little 'stick' poking out of the left hand balance shaft is the shaft that drives the oil pump !

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Here is the oil pump drive 'stick' a little closer, you can't see in the picture but it is basically the shape and thickness of a normal HB pencil (hexagonal in profile, like an allen key)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Finally a very bad picture of the oil pump drive itself having been removed from the balance shaft.  Basically the shoulders have  worn off and the shaft can turn freely inside the end of the balance shaft no longer driving the oil pump with the obvious disastrous consequences !

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So your nice new VW is has it's life-blood pumped around by a shaft that retails from VAG £2.69, no thicker then a pencil connected to two shafts driven at twice engine speed by a rattling chain and then you wonder why the entire engine has just grenaded !......nice one VW  !

(Remember, these engines are fitted to VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and probably many others and this shaft can let go at any mileage, thousands have but VAG are trying to deny and ignore the issue !)

not a comprehensive explanation, but I guess a couple of days labour plus fluids is required for this job...

I personally have an aftermarket warranty on my wifes '05 Renault Scenic. It's only £18 a month, well worth it.

I have only ever heard great things about this company

Don't forget I need a mention if you buy a warranty as I get £10 back IIRC Very Happy
