Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Yea its a 1600TX big bumpers as standard, also has 16V front splitter, GTI side strip (minus the badging), 16V arches and skirts, all from standard, maybe VW were getting rid of stock???
Plans are to first and foremost, clean it up really nice, then sort out the bits it failed its MOT (over a year ago) on, which are niggly bits like brake hoses (corrosion and bulging), exhaust blow, CO and rear tyre orientation (have new wheels and tyres to go on anyway).
I have some coilovers on the way, so I'll put them on with my new wheels, I'll keep this updated with any changes, and will post lots of piccy's for you all.
Mileage is higher than I'd normally buy, but for the price I paid it doesn't matter, VW's are strong anyhow, and at the end of the day an engine swap and rebuild are good fun and easy for me to do Think its got about 130,000 didn't spot any rust when I looked around it though, I'll post any findings when I give her the first wash down and polish. Fingers crossed!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Went to visit tonight, had a goosey gander round it, and really couldn't find any scratches dents or rust, the rubbers look like they might be on the turn though. Oh and I found some wierd sock thing behind the rear arm rest! Guessing its for skis?
Couldn't get it started though, thought it was going to be a case of jumps leads, but I need to go back armed with tools and remove the spark plugs so there is less resistance on the engine to get it freely moving again, plus gas may be the answer. Cool beans though, took my mate from work with me and he loves it! He especially loves the blue interior and the cassette holders!
I need an 'OLD SKOOL' window sticker made up.

Thanks to Reaver and t-jetta-stare
She will look alot better when I clean her!
Today though, was a very good day for me.
1. Coilovers arrived!
2. Tried my self made wiring for my pioneer bass tube thing (most places went £70+ for the wiring kit!!!).
My soldered bits of wires with spade connectors for easy installation/removal work a treat! Beats forking out £70! Sounds the business too.
3. Got the Jetta running!!!! She was struggling with compression so I removed the plugs and squirted inside the bores with a load of plusgas and let it soak in. Cleaned up the plugs and replaced them, but still no joy. It sounded as if there was no juiceleft in the battery but it was running from leads off my fiesta!
removed the airbox and noticed a horrible pool of petrol on the exhaust manifold!!! I had a very leaky hose! Stole part of my washer hose as a temp fix, turned it over whilst squirting some easy start into the carb and she was hesitant at first and then she roared back into life! You wouldn't believe the amount of smoke that came out the exhaust!
Moved her from where she was to just down the road at another work base where I can continue working on her. More updates to come!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Ordered more goodies today,
Oil and air filters, spark plugs, alternator belt, 4 brake hoses and 9 inches of fuel hose for under £51! Also found out my uncles got a pierburg carb on his shelf for the jetta, which is great news as I don't think the choke came off last night. Pesky wax therm. All good though, things should get moving soon!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Right, Friday night, had her in the garage at work on the ramp, couldn't see any rust underneath eiother, looks like I've bought a reall goodun!
New battery went on with the spark plugs, air filter, oil filter and new oil. Fuel hose is in the boot as spare, when I movede it the other day I replaced the washer hose repair with a section of air line. went to replace the rear brake hoses, but the wrong ones had been sent. They were fine anyway, failed on corrosion but its surface and only very minor. Replaced the near side front hose though as it had perished slightly and bulged under pressure.
Washed her and treated the bumpers to some good stuff, they are now the colour they should be (bar the side skirts and front splitter, which I will do when I polish her properly). Gave a small section a bit of tcut and it came up nice with little effort.
Saturday morning, picked up the wheels, took her for mot at my uncles, never did it though, the pierburg 2E carb that was on the shelf was vauxhall, so couldn't use it, did use the wax stat though, but still idled high (choke was off as the butterfly was open). Wheels on though, and they do look pretty nice.
Today, decided to take the carb off and inspect.

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Had to do something, and didn't finish the last post!
Right, I dont think I replaced the wax stat, it was just the bimettalic coil I changed for the choke, the wax stat is the bit right at the very front yes? Thats broke in two ways, it doesn't work and the casing is brittle and the lugs have snapped off, I have a second hand carb on its way to replace and I will strip and rebuild the one thats broke ready for when the next one fails! £36 including delivery from ebay, told it works fine, so fingers crossed! Must buy the haynes carb manual, coz I don't think I set the bimettalic strip housing up correctly (IE its off a vuaxhall, it fits but the lugs are in a different position so I think the spring is too strong if you get me?)
When she was up on the ramps at my uncles he had a look and was very surprised at how clean she was! TBH so was I!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Here are some pictures.
With the wheels on, and you can see the difference the bumper gel has made (side skirts haven't been done for comparison). I'll get round to fitting the coilovers when she's on the road and I can drive her to work.

The two subs in the boot, extremely messy! This is temporary as the spare is coming out in place for a can of tyre weld, and a false floor is going in with the amps sunk into it with some cooling fans and maybe build the subs in a bit better. There are two more amps to go in for speakers when there fitted.

The pioneer ipod adapter, which I need to think about mounting somewhere and routing the connection lead where prying eyes can't see!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
Thanks mate I used far too much wiring, just untill I know exactly how its going to be, then I can sort it all out! Hopefully the exterior will look better when I t cut, polish and wax it.
On the carb front, the one I bought on ebay over two weeks ago is still on its way, bloke said he sent it out earlier in the week, so hopefully in the next couple of days I'll have it, in the mean time I ordered a new waxstat from GSF just in case it doesn't turn up. Was going to by a new choke housing, till I saw the price! I'll make do with the vauxhall jobby!

Should be able to stash the box thingy under the glove box somewhere. I use an old mobile phone in a similar way; I have it mounted on a phone holder screwed to two switch blanks next to the head unit. The cable is routed through the side of one of the blanks to the back of the head unit - this can be stashed behind the blank when not being used!

Re: Foldy's 1990 Blue TX1600
sorted the wiring for the ipod unit, cable tied the excess up, and cable tied that along with the ipod unit to the underside of the heater venting?opened up one of the holes in the under glove box tray for the plug to fit through so its real tidy now.
Still got issues with the carb though! got a new wax stat and fitted it, sorted out the positioning of the choke housing, but it still plays up, sometimes it will idle then gradually rise, or just sound likeits sitting at about 1500-2000 rpm. and its over fuelling.
Ebay carb turned up yesterday over four weeks after I bought it! And it doesn't even have a wax therm! Its manual choke too, which may be a blessing buit its more stuff I need to buy!
And I found out the head gasket has gone, as there is water in my oil. At least its a piss easy one to do though.
