Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
Hello all,
I've only just found this site. looks good so far, i'm looking forward to having an explore. I thought it rude not to say hello.
I've had a nasty vw habit now for the last decade or so and have owned loads of vw's finest water coolers, usually doing engine swaps and generally having a play with them.
My current (and so far one of my favorite toys) is my '82 Jetta, starting life as a 1300, before having a heart transplant and is now sporting a rather fetching 16v and a pair of webers. Its all a bit frankenstein to be honest, but it has some go and sounds ace.
heres a couple of pics:

Re: Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
wow.
What a coincidence.
I've had her since boxing day 2006. it changed hands a couple of times before I got hold of her.
Unfortunately she still hasn't been polished since i got her, but i was mega impressed that the shell was in really good solid condition.
She has passed 2 MOTs with no real probs (but then there is very little of the original running gear. everything has seen some attention in some way......

Welcome to the site
Your a very lucky man to be able to swap engines. I would love to be able to do it myself but i can only do bodywork and resprays.

I'll have to admit that whilst I can wave a spanner okay, i do wish i was better skilled at bodywork. I'll have a stab at it, but no way can i do a really good job of it.
Thats why my cars tend to look a bit agricultural.

Re: Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
Hi Jake,
Mine started out as a 1.3 so i had to replace the gearbox, gearlinkage and steering rack for gti items. I also had to move the drivers side engine mount backwards to accommodate the 16v engine. I believe yours should already be in the right place being a 1.6.
Once the engine is in the hole (with suitable gearbox of choice) you simply need to sort out the fueling which is easiest with a facet pump and fuel pressure regulator (you can ditch the fuel return line) and wire up the 16v using the standard 16v wiring loom for the ignition side of things.
you may need to monkey around with the master cylinder and servo as you may have clearance issues between the master cylinder and the dizzy.
on the exhaust side of things, I opted for the Ashley 4 branch for 16v engines into a mk1 golf ( a proper conversion item) which saved me messing about trying to fab up a downpipe using a combo of 16v and mk1 gti pipework. it really is worth the £200 odd quid as it save loads of time and hassle).
then i swapped the non gti wishbones for gti spec ones with the anti roll bar, uprated the brakes (vented disks a la gti and 16v master cylinder and servo.). and set about jetting the carbs.
suspensionwise, i used coilovers, but you can more or less use what you like - depends how well you want it to handle.
The whole conversion is quite straight forward, i may have forgotton some minor details, but i'll add more if i think of it....
Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
Hello nice to see another helpfull soul in the dub fellowship. I have a MK1 golf gti and a jetta 16valver and have always wondered what it would be like to mix um up but i cant bring myself to mess with to good cars. Well done on yours though its always good to see an old dog with some new tricks.
Re: Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
Oh just a quick one..... I think if you use the dizzy cap from a 1.6 pug 205 gti (if you can bring yourself to ask for one at your local parts desk without gaging) you can get the clearance past the brake servo. It takes a little modding to fit but it does work quite well[/u]
Re: Hello from sunny/rainy Naaaaarfolk
I'd looked at the pug dizzy cap, but with a little tweaking (16v mastercylinder with the header tank installed the wrong way round) the standard dizzy cap works fine. its all a bit close, but a suitably uprated poly engine mounts mean the engine doesn't move too much so no probs with clearance.
I'm aiming for a pedal box set up soon so that i can keep the bay a little tidier.
