Post by jamie_pyrite Wed May 27, 2009 8:45 pm

Well I've finally gotten round to starting this thread about my Jetta

My 1991 1.6 TX Jetta. Picked this up for £200 from a mate, great condition for what I paid - Engine didn't run that well and it came with no MOT. I originally bought this car just to keep me going until September when I go to uni for a year (I sold my golf) but now the plan is to keep this for a while after I get back from Uni, giving me time to save up some pennies!

That's how it arrived on the BBS wheels. The wheels were very badly lacquer peeled and all the tyres were dangerously rubbish chinese rubber. I sold these on and stuck my nice BBS RA's on very quickly. I also sold on the silly little racing steering wheel it came with.. Racing steering wheel on a 1.6 jetta with no PAS.. pointless!

So I made £100 back from just selling a few parts from the car. Then parts to get my through the MOT came to about £50, so the car now cost me £150 to get through an MOT.

So here's the car sat on the RA's not looking too clean!

I currently have an old golf gti interior fitted to the car which I received for free. While it's alot comfier and keeps me in my seat better, it is VERY tatty and falling to pieces. Plus the rear bench isn't secured due to the golf bench being different to the jetta. I think I'm going to go back to the nice clean jetta interior.

next up, nice black VW badge!

I had the badge painted for free by a very very kind member of this forum. Thanks again! Very Happy

I have a set of coilovers on order and am awaiting delivery of those. I'm not happy how the front sits higher than the back so thought I may as well get some hottuning coilovers for it!

I've been getting rather annoyed with the pathetic 1.6 carb engine and have had nothing but trouble with the pierburg and have admitted defeat. An offer for a very cheap 1.8 8v gti engine+box came up which I couldn't refuse! I picked up the engine today. The plan is to collect all the bits needed over the next month, then do the conversion once I finish college for the Summer! It should be a great learning experience which I'll document throughout Smile

Here's the engine I picked up (bad phone pic)

I should have a lot of other parts on their way in the next few days!

Coilovers are on!!! It is sooooooooooooooooo low! Stupidly low. I'm going to either raise it or roll the arches tomorrow. It's too low to be driveable every day.

Well here's the pictures!

Well I've been doing some more work on the gti engine before putting it in. Stripped everything off it and I've been spraying them.

I've also done a straight swap with a local lad, his golf gti grill for my Jetta grill. It looks great! Very Happy I haven't got any pictures of mine yet, but took a picture of his golf.

Excuse the terrible cameraphone quality!

So that's my Jetta up to now. Just updated my project up to date in one go [:y:]

Next up,
get the grill trim back on,
finish spraying the other engine bits,
clean up and spray the engine and gearbox,
change the clutch on the new engine,
source gti wiring loom
source PAS rack

..Then get the engine in!! [Razz]

Well today has been a productive car day! In 2 hours I managed to get the engine stripped and cleaned up, as well as fully painted [Smile]

Bottom end was so rusty I gave it a good wire brushing down and then black hammerite straight onto it. I was going to do the g'box silver, but it was soooo mucky it would have been pretty much impossible to get it looking good so I went for black too. Head was easy with a good degrease and some smooth silver. Rocker cover done in satin black and the inlet manifold done in smooth silver too.

Also swapped my interior back to the original Jetta stuff. Looks nice and original!

pics..

Going to *try* and rebuild the engine tomorrow morning.. It was one of those things that was easy peasy to dismantle.. but putting back together isn't so easy!
