Hi Everyone,

Picked up my first ever jetta a few weeks ago from a friend of the family who has sadly passed away. The car was going to be scrapped so i said I would like to bring it back home and see if I can keep her on the road for a while longer. It's a 1.6 TX 4+E in Green ( Lovely I can hear you saying) 46,000 from new, loads of history and she still has her original dealer number plates on.

I drove her back from Essex to Suffolk a couple of weeks ago and all seemed fine, but the next morning when I went to take the kids to school she spat petrol out all over the inlet manifold and the engine revs won't come down. I don't have a rev counter on this model but it must be well over 2000. So my introduction to jetta motoring has not been a good one so far.

I have replaced the rubber gasket at the base of the carb so far but this has made no difference and my local garage has also checked over the choke system but they said its all working fine. The rota and Dizzy cap have also been changed and the plugs cleaned, they were all sooty black. They were unable to help resolve the issue and have suggested I change all the pipes on the carb as it sounds like an air leak problem.
The car also only starts on 2 cylinders and it takes a good few minutes for the other 2 to start working No

Anyone know a good mechanic in Lowestoft lol!

Sorry I'm a bit new to some of the terminology used, what is Co, I think she's running very rich, I also only managed to get 120 miles out of £40 of petrol. So something's not right and i can't trace any leaks. I've got her booked into a local garage for next week now but I may go over things again this weekend and double check everything. scratch

120miles to £40 Shocked ouch the Co is to do with the emissions, You need to find a decent garage that know about setting up carburetors and get the mixture and Co setup you should find its a different car afterwards Very Happy

Ok cheers, Yes I think this garage should be ok as they cater for older cars. I explained the problems I'm encountering and they sounded quite confident of resolving the issue so fingers crossed. Thanks for your replies Wink I'll let you know how it goes
