Hello,

The Amber warning light came onto the multi function display of my 2006 Jetta TDI on Friday night. I was about to go out with my wife, so quickly put some oil into the engine (I always carry some with me Castrol 5W30).

I put it in rather hurridly and then we went out. On Saturday I took the car to the car wash......I noticed that when I turned the key in the ignition that the amber engine oil light came on........it flashed 5 times and then went off when I turned the engine on. It does not display when I am driving......only when I turn the ignition on.

When I check the oil level on a flat surface, it looks like it has been topped up above the correct oil level on the dipstick.

My understanding is that the red light comes on when there is 0psi i.e. problem at the pump.......but this is amber and goes out......does this mean I have over filled the dipstick?

Anyone know why it flashes 5 times and then goes out? I think this is just a warning.....but am going to double check the dipstick once again......if I have filled it too high I can drain some out easily, but I want to know is does the amber light flash to tell the owner that the oil level is too high as well as too low?

My understanding was that the warning light only flashed when there was too little oil in the engine......can it tell when the oil level is too high as well?

Thanks for any information.

Further update. Tonight I checked the car for oil level in my garage.....it looked like it was at Max level (even a little above) so I decided to drain the oil a bit (0.5 litre), then topped up the oil on flat ground and topped up so that I was mid way between Min and Max. I checked the level several times before re-starting the engine. Unfortunately the amber oil light still came on with the ignition switch and flashed 5 times.
I then re-read my owners manual and found a comment on page 27 of section 3.1 which stated that "If the oil sensor is damaged, the warning lamp flashes for 5 seconds when the ignition is switched on."
So Bingo, it looks like I know what it is - but now I need to know rough cost of the oil pan sensor (I assume this is the correct one) and also how hard it is to fit it?
I am assuming that as this is a priority 2 flashing amber warning light that I am ok to drive the vehicle......any clever people out there disagree with me or have any other advice?
Let me know your thoughts - much appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris
