Right where do i start as you all know ive had it deliverd due to the break down. went over my dads this mornin to get a proper look at my new project so heres the lowdown

Here we go

I thought id bought a complete lemon when she broke down but she started fine this morning so i know it cant be a disaster really here are the piccies of how she looks

not too bad so far seems fairly solid interior is awesome carpets clean interior no rips

Now for the iffy stuff the steering wheel logo included aint good

and if you look to the left of the steering wheel the eagle eyed will have already noticed the little flick switch it took me ages to figure out what it was, any ideas?? no i didnt think so heres a closer look

Well? come on ok yep its the windscreen wipers Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing the stalk is dead it does nothin i think thatll have to change Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing oh and lets not forget the 145 R13 wheels Suspect

Ill move onto the rear now youve seen that abomination generally as i have said the car seems fairly sollid (ive not removed the kit yet wich has recently been refixed with self tappers pale pale pale im just glad i can say recently unlike poor Rowlesys) the only bad bit seems to be here

Yep its gon right through so its gonna need welding but that was to be expected

oh i almost forgot the spares i found in the boot

Think it looks great and has alot of potential. Remove, paint and refit the bodykit and it'll be a bobby dazzler!

A nice set of 8" bbs splitties or even some 16" seven spoke RS wheels, as they are very similar to the original Zenders.

Its got 160mph clocks too, only thought the 16v's had them.

Sorry i didnt explain that very well

Its the windscreen wipers for some strange reason instead of fixing the wiper stalk that was used as a replacement confused

Hi bud you can be sure ill be ringing you on the Jet im gonna need help on this one :)I had noticed that the wipers were for a left hooker however if you look in the GTi Engineering gallery all of them are that weve found so far i presume all early mk2s were set up like that

yeah all early mk2's had wrong way arounf whipers, my old 16v does.

its very odd tho as the mk1's had them the right way around with the blanking hole bu then they did them the other way with no blanking hole, then later went back to the blanking hole again...?!?!?

looks like a good project reaver, fist thing id do is get the kit off tho, see what the damage is

Right i need some advice or maybe more depending if anyone can help.

Ive lost the gate between 1st and reverse in the Jetta so its reverse for me at the traffic lights lol. Is this an easy job on these boxes?

Cylendar 4 has gone im fairly sure its headgasket so not a huge job but considering a replacement early 1.8 or even a mk3 2.0 engine and box if anyone has spare let me know cause its gonna be less hastle me thinks

What the issue with the gearbox? Is it the little plate that stops you knocking it into reverse? If so that an easy fix.

I can't remember if the GTI Eng engine had the bottom ends fettled. I'd whip the engine out and rebuild it, theres no rush, you got until next March!

Ok ive started to strip the car down to work out whats a foot heres a few pics

The head removed ok so nothing odd here unless any of you can spot an issue Neutral

There are one or two spots i thought might have been the cause but they arent really bad enough to cause a zero presure reading when all built up and as you can see the gaskets well practically brand new No

now the issue seems to be with the third cylendar as seen here now ive gone over it with a fine toothed combe and all i can seem to see is what looks like a small scoreing on the inside however it i suppise could be a hairline crack No you can also see from the image where the bore has been sat in open position for some time but this will not have caused it im a bit lost scratch

The lack of compression says there a leak somewhere. The fact the head gasket looks new suggests it has been done recently prob due to the previous HG failing. The pic of the head doesn't suggest it has been skimmed so it was either cause of the original failure or when refitted, the head wasn't torqued evenly, but i'd say the head was slightly warped.

The coolant has leaked into the bore and as it hasn't been run for a while, thats whats caused the corrosion.

Rebuild the head and check the bores for the hone markings, if they're still good you might get away with it, if not a rehone will be in order.

If it helps I have a spare head in great condition, its the one I removed from my blue car you saw at the pod. Engine was running really well and as I posted the only reason I had to take it all apart was due to the trust washer making a right mess of the crank. I also kept all 4 pistons, rods, rings, and caps if there any use to you. I was thinking of putting the into a spare 1.8 bottom end sat in stari's garage but can't really be bothered, too many other things on the go at the moment. The only problem with the bottom end was that the 4th cylinder is slightly marked by the piston slightly chipping. We caught it early so cylinder would probably just need a light honing and one of the replacement pistons fitting. I know we are quite a way from you but the offer is there.

A couple of weeks ago there was a complete 2.0l lump near you that sold on ebay for less than a tenner. Just thought I'd mention that as it would have been a great 2.0l donor.

Shes ALIVE!! cheers now runs however theres a lovely leak from the bottom rad hose and the water pump gasket Mad so its off to GSF this weekend will have more pics up next week

Pulled the head to bits basicly all else at the mo seems fine (fingers crossed) here are a few up dates on the pics Now started the strippin process ready for the full respray in Feb

Well had a really busy weekend travelling Norfolk got a lot to show for it though heres the biggy

Talk about rare you wouldent belive the lengths i had to go to get these and they arent even the right color Laughing also the car is supposed to have leccy windows but there was no sign untill i removed the door cards. As it happens all the motors are there but no loom or centre console soooooooo i managed to get this (yep i know the switches are upsideown lol)
