Hi, am a new member and new to forums (being old fashioned and aircooled!) Been into aircooled v-dubs for about 30 years, but recently inherited a 20k genuine mile Jetta Mk2 1989 garage find, with NO rust just dust and still shiny brakes! Getting a new battery and plugs to attempt start up tomorrow, not turned a wheel for 7 yrs! Clutch works and oil is like new so fingers crossed.

Helloha and welcome. cheers A genuine 20k i wish a had that kind of luck! Just a word too the wise if she has been sat for 7yrs then i would recomend a oil change plus take the plugs out and turn her over till the oil light goes out (in ten second bursts) we have seen oil pumps seize up very quickly after they have been sat for even a couple of years. Dont mean to sound rude or tell you how to such eggs Wink Smile just trying to help keep what sounds to be one of the lowest mileage mk2's on the road! hope it all goes well cant wait to see some pics is it a small or big bumper model???? bounce bounce

Regards Alex.

New member Empty There's life in the old dog yet

Post by Camperman Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:35 pm

Success! After changing the plugs and cautiously cranking the engine over in small doses without the ignition connected, the 1.6 motor burst into life once again with everything switched back on. It ran really well on auto choke and quite smoothly considering. The only issue was a leaking fuel hose from the resevoir in front of the air cleaner, so this was removed and reconnected securely. Being into aircooled VWs I know to always look for this kind of detail (too many bbq'd campers!). Will try and get some pics attached later when I get the hang of it.

New member Empty VWs never die!

Post by Camperman Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:29 pm

Motor was a little rattly when it started, but so would I be after 7 years in a dry garage! Exhaust looks new (well in 2003). Apparently my sister was the last to drive it into the garage in 2003 and had the forsight of leaving the handbrake off but in gear with a brick behind the back wheel. Very Happy
Just tried to post some pics but lost the whole thing so if anyone can help, will be grateful.

New member Empty Jetta Gotta Go!

Post by Camperman Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:41 am

Not been on here for a while, school hols etc, took old camper to Cornwall 65mph and 850 miles round trip, faster in a jetta! Unfortunately Jetta is up for sale as there is no room and old bus needs a dry garage for the winter. Not done any more work on car but starts like a dream and runs sweet as a nut. Not MOT'd yet as I have no trailer but if it doesn't sell will MOT and do a full service. My hope is that it would go to someone who would appreciate a fine VW and the solid engineering that goes with it. Keep u posted.

New member Empty Jetta sold!

Post by Camperman Sat Apr 16, 2011 3:59 pm

Fraid I sold the Jetta, but the new owner likes this era of VW so may even crop up on here soon. The car sold on word of mouth and didn't need advertising at all. Sad to see such a good car go but just didn't have the room or the time to give the car the attention it deserved. I've no doubt it will go on for years. Thanks for all your kind comments and if you see an aging baby blue and cream bay window campervan struggling up a hill, give us a wave!
