BIG problem!!

hey guys!! recently my 2.0l 8v started heating up, to bout 100-110 *C. i was told it could be the thermostat or the radiatir fan switch. changed both and it still heated up and the fan doesnt even kick in. so then was told it sounds like the head gasket. so i've just changed that and it still heats up and is now running really sluggish.. i dnt think its using any water and still starts fine. ive rigged the radiator fan up to a switch so i can turn it on but even with it on the car heats up... please can someone help!!!! scratch

Hello, have you tried flushing the block out with a hose pipe and all the pipes? Even try tacking the new thermostat out again and testing that to see if its opening. Sounds like it has a blockage to me but someone else may come up with other possable theories.

you need vagcom mate. or even a fault code reader. at least it will eliminate some of the possibilities.

Could be an air lock in the system - stops the cooling system running as it should. Sometimes they just take ages to get out as the air gets trapped. Try running it up to temperature with the expansion cap lid off, it might bubble and pop as the air makes its way to the top. Dont do this for to long at a time though as water bursts everywhere, and top it up with coolant after each attempt (if it's low). Best way to check for air locks is to feel all the pipes that come in and out of the radiator, the engine block itself and two will dissapear into the bulkhead (for the heater matrix) If all these get hot then the system should be running fine. Another problem could be the water pump, which if it is like mine is where the thermostat sits, sometimes the propelllor blades can wear away meaning that the water is not being pumped around the engine properly, these are quite cheap, i think i paid £18 for mine from eurocarparts. Failing all this, it could just be another stubburn VW. If it does get hot, run the heaters on full blast with the windows open, just another way of getting rid of some heat.

thanks for all your info guys! it turned out the temperature sensor was broke, which caused all the overheating! and the slowness is down to the timing being put out slightly... probly my bad haha!!
